Community and Business Toolkit for Tidal Energy Development

Editors: Dr. Shelley MacDougall and Dr. John Colton

Project Coordinator: Alan Howell

The Community and Business Toolkit for Tidal Energy Development was developed in response to Nova Scotia’s growing involvement in tidal energy development coupled with its renewable energy targets. The toolkit was developed in order to support the sustainable development of both community-based and large-scale tidal development.

The toolkit informs policy makers, municipal counsellors, device and project developers, financiers, community members and other users of the water, thereby empowering stakeholders and helping to ensure the development of tidal energy is environmentally, socially and economically sustainable. Toolkit Modules include:

  • Overview of Tidal Energy
  • Measuring and Accessing the Tidal Resource
  • Tidal Power Extraction Devices
  • Regulatory Regime for Tidal Energy
  • Environmental Risk Assessment
  • Stakeholder and Community Engagement
  • Financial Evaluation and Cost of Energy
  • Opportunities and Strategies for Communities
  • Opportunities and Strategies for Businesses
  • Financing, Government Supports, and Managing Risk
  • Assessing the Potential Impact of a Five MW Tidal Energy Project

The Community and Business Toolkit for Tidal Energy Development was the collaborative work of researchers from a broad range of disciplines, in consultation with community, industry and government stakeholders of tidal energy.
